And the river runs....

Banana River at sunset

is a lagoon that lies between Cape Canaveral and Merritt Island in Brevard County, Florida in the United States. It is part of the Indian River Lagoon system, and connects at its south end to the Indian River; it is the only part of the lagoon system not in the Intracoastal Waterway. It also has an outlet to the Atlantic Ocean via a lock into Port Canaveral. The lagoon includes salt marshes, mangrove swamps, seagrass beds, drift algae, oyster bars, tidal flats, and spoil islands, providing habitats for many marine species. These are brackish waters mixed of salt and fresh water;waist deep with a soft bottom sand/grass. Commercial and recreational activities in the lagoon generate more than US$ 800 million annually for the local economy.

Hi my friends,
many thanks for all the kind comments to my last post here on my blog or over there at Facebook.
Love to see you enjoying my humbled blog :)

Today's picture is a detail shot of the Banana River in sunset light.
I was longtime waiting for some Dolphins to appear at the surface or a Manatee, but nothing happend!
I guess they just were not in a mood to smile into my camera.
Well, maybe another day, who knows....*smile*.....

Have a wonderful Friday - it's weekend again!
Is time flying by faster than ever???

The Pelicans are back!

The pelicans are migrating and took over "The rocks" in Jetty Park, at Cape Canaveral

Get out of my way, that was my spot last year and it's my spot this year also!

Hi my friends,
The white pelicans are migrating and back. Taking over "The Rocks" out in Jetty Park at the Cape Canaveral shores. I have captured some of them and it's fun to watch their cleaning rituals.

A large flock of White Pelicans winter also in the Indian River near Scottsmoor Landing. You might see them flying and feeding anywhere on Merritt Island.

Thank you very much for all your kind comments to my "Wordless Sunday" post.
I'm gladly appreciate them.

Wishing you a good start in the new week.
~Susanne

Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge

We took a trip to Pelican Island, Sebastian, FL

Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge

is a United States National Wildlife Refuge located just off the western coast of Orchid Island in the Indian River Lagoon east of Sebastian, Florida. The refuge consists of a 3-acre (12,000 m2) island that includes an additional 2.5 acres (10,000 m2) of surrounding water and is located off the east coast of Florida of the Indian River Lagoon. Established by an executive order of President Theodore Roosevelt on March 14, 1903, Pelican Island was the first national wildlife refuge in the United States. It was created to protect egrets and other birds from extinction by plume hunters.

Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge holds hundreds of species of animals including birds, fish, plants, and mammals. The wetlands of Pelican Island are a major ecological system supporting the huge biological diversity. Fifteen federally listed threatened and endangered species live in Pelican Island NWR and around Indian River Lagoon. Of the endangered species, West Indian Manatees and sea turtles occupy parts of the lagoon. Around the lagoon in the refuge are two Wood Stork refuges. These birds along with other wading birds that nest on the island thrive on the tremendous fish population. Pelican Island is home to many nesting birds including Brown Pelicans, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Reddish Egrets, Great Blue Heron, Little Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, American White Ibis, Glossy Ibis, Double-crested Cormorant, Anhinga, and American Oystercatcher.

Thanks for all the kind comments, my friends :)
Tomorrow will be my Wordless Sunday again - stay tuned...

And the Eagle flies...

This was the first time in my life I have seen eagles flying in the wild so close. I wish, I would have had my longer 600mm lens with me to capture those "Bald Head Eagles" better! There were for sure five of them circling over my head, loud screaming - while down in the water the fisher man enjoyed the tranquility of the Cooper River and tried to catch some good pieces for his dinner.

The Garden of Eden - is to find here!

The way into the Garden

Door to heaven...?

This must be the "Garden of Eden", a picture perfect paradise!

Deep green water and only peace in the air

A sanctuary for all kind of birds singing and the White Heron was looking out for food.

A sea of Azaleas everywhere your eyes are looking

A dream in pastel...

Am I in the tropics or what....?

Spanish Moss hanging from the trees, touching the water - it makes this place very romantic and heaven like. I enjoyed this afternoon very much!

This garden
is a wonderful treatment for your eyes and for your soul - it's Paradise!

A Visit to the Dry Tortugas - Series 6

Take a ride with this small airplane for visiting the Dry Tortugas Islands or catch the Ferry early in the morning.

This picture is the view from the top of Fort Jefferson and it gives me a feeling of eternity, peace and freedom: only blue water, clouds and horizon where ever your eyes are looking around.

After a very intresting guided tour in Fort Jefferson, take a walk on the walls all around the fort and enjoy nature, sunshine and the blue color of the water. You also will see many snorklers enjoying the crystal clear underwater scene.

It's just a perfect day out there - another part of paradise!

The white sandbar is the bird sanctuary across from Fort Jefferson.
