Harry and Jimmy

Yesterday afternoon, after the big heavy rainfall, I had a new visitor in my garden. I called this Ibis bird "Harry". He was very busy picking at all the fat worms, snails and other "bug-goodies".

But he was not the only one
new visitor....

May I introduce you to "Jimmy"......?

Jimmy is new in the environment and is quite different than all the other brown-red chickens we have running around the house. He is white, tall, can barely crow - but he tries! And he has to fight very hard to defend his new territory.

While Harry is gone by now, it seems that Jimmy won the fights against all the other roosters and decided to stay.

Is Jimmy yours or just a visitor? We are in a very rural area, and if we had chickens running around the house they would be quickly scoffed by a fox, fisher cat, or coy dog.

Hehe!!! We call ibises hadeda's in this country, and there's a childrens song on an African kids CD that sings about "Harry the Hadeda" - it's my oldest son's favourite sing. Very apt name you chose there :)

Hi Kathy,
Thank you for the comment.

The whole Island of Key West is a chicken farm. All the roosters and chickens are living free, that means they are wild, roaming around all over the island - and protected! You cannot harm them or catch them for a good "chicken on the grill" for a Sunday meal...you will be in jail for that for sure!! And this is now serious and NOT a joke! Funny, right?

But you have to know, down here in Key West is everything a little bit different - a little bit more crazy than on other places! :-)

Hi Jenty,

That's indeed funny! I had to smile so much when I was reading your words. Maybe this is "Harry", who took the long trip from SA...you never know...:-) Thanks for your comment, Jenty!
