The Snowbirds Are Here...

The snowbirds are definitely here - captured at Cocoa Beach, FL 2012-10-25

But, please what is a "snowbird" anyway.....? Wiki has the answer, like to anything else :-))

The term "snowbird" is used to describe people from the U.S. Northeast, U.S. Midwest, or Canada who spend a large portion of winter in warmer locales such as California, Arizona, Florida,Texas, the Carolinas, or elsewhere along the Sun Belt region of the southern and southwest United States, Mexico, and areas of the Caribbean. It is also used for people from eastern Canada or northern Canada who migrate to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, for the winter. Victoria is known for having very mild winters by Canadian standards, and has an annual "blossom count" in mid-February to prove its warm winter status.

Snowbirds are typically retirees, and business owners who have a second home in a warmer location or whose business can be easily moved from place to place, such as flea market and swap meet vendors. Some snowbirds carry their homes with them, as campers (mounted on bus or truck frames) or as boats following the east coast Intra-coastal waterway.

In the past snowbirds were frequently wealthy persons with independent incomes who maintained several seasonal residences and shifted residence with the seasons to avail themselves of the best time to be at each location; this custom has declined considerably due to changing patterns of taxation and the relative ease of long-distance travel compared with earlier times.

Many of these "snowbirds" also use their vacation time to declare permanent residency in low- or no-tax income tax states (where the tax bases are augmented by high tourism taxes), and claim lower non-resident income taxes in their home states. Canadian snowbirds usually make sure they retain residency in Canada in order to retain health benefits.

The right to vote for local office is governed by local law, so it may be possible to vote for local offices in both places if the locality permits nonresident voting based on property ownership, but representation in the United States federal Congress is for residents as enumerated by the decennial census and voting in U.S. federal elections in more than one jurisdiction is deemed to be electoral fraud.

I'm wishing you a very HAPPY and relaxing SUNDAY!

Airshow in Cocoa Beach 2010

A small collage of impressions from the recent Airshow 2010 in Cocoa Beach, Florida
(click in the picture to see it bigger)

Organizers estimated Saturday's air show attendance at 100,000 and Sunday's crowd at 60,000.
That's more than twice the estimated turnout of last October's inaugural event.

Hi my friends,
Thank you all for the wonderful comments to my "Wordless Sunday" post. I'm happy you liked it that much.

We had a very noisy Weekend with this giant airshow going on over Cocoa Beach.
They flew so close and so loud over all the houses so that I'm sure, all the windows were shaking.
And it was also hurting my ears.
But it was big fun and very impressive to see those "Thunderbirds" (and other airplanes like the F-16 Jet fighters and smaller "Bumble-Bee's") flying their risky formations. They flew so close over the water - dusting up everybody at the beach with sand and colored smoke.
There was also one women pilot flying - would YOU do that job...????  :))

I wish you all a wonderful week!

Perspective...

Distance not only gives nostalgia, but perspective, and maybe objectivity.

A Crab at the Beach

You cannot teach a crab to walk straight.

Hi my friends,
I hope you all had a nice weekend. Thanks for all of you who came visiting my humbled blog and made a nice comment. I do very much appreciate that.

Today's crab in my photo was captured at Cocoa Beach - it was dead already, poor little crab!

I'm a "crab" or in better words, I'm a "cancer" in my sign zodiac, my Birthday will be coming up soon.
And, America is always so friendly and so splendid to me, the whole country is celebrating my Birthday with BIG fireworks and with wonderful music, extra for me - but always one day to early!!!
They just cannot wait, I guess...*smile*.... :))

I have always loved the Beach

“I have always loved the beach. The smell of the salty water, the wind in my face, the gentle roar of the waves all combine to create a sense of peace and calm.”

 Hi my friends,
almost unbelievable, it's Friday and weekend is around the corner - again!
It seems for me that's Friday all the time...*smile*...

Have a wonderful Friday and many thanks for the comments.

Pretty close to the ground

It's pretty close....!

This is the spot where the air plains in training are landing - and also starting - to their training flights. It's impressive and also scary looking, to see them fly so close to the ground.

Waiting for a big event

.....waving in the wind....

Hi my friends,

we are waiting for the launch of the Space Shuttle "Discovery STS-128" 01.36 A.M. at Kennedy Space Center. It's the first time in my life to see this spectacle live. I hope I'm not to excited and will forget to click the exposure button....LOL.. If not, I'll have some pictures and maybe also a little video to show you :)

It was a great and beautiful day today... we went into Cocoa Beach and to Melbourne to explore the region and had a fine lunch at "Applebees".... :) that's the "hard and exciting" life of two retirees...LOL...

Stay tuned with me and your kind comments are always very welcome :)
Susanne
