Human beings are human beings. They say what they want, don't they? They used to say it across the fence while they were hanging wash. Now they just say it on the Internet. ~ Dennis Miller ~
The African American cemetery at Charles Towne Landing dates from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. In 1974 research on the cemetery was published by John Combs from the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology. This paper is recognized as the first academic study of African American burial practices and cemeteries in the United States. The cemetery continues to be a research focus for the park.
