Tuesday Specials #6 - on Friday

Many people wrote me in their comments that they can see similarity in the houses of Key West with the houses of Charleston - and I think they are right. This picture is my husband David's painting of a house in Key West and one of my favorites!

When Tuesday Specials comes on a Friday....

I had an idea about supporting my husband’s fine art paintings. I am going to call it “The Tuesday Specials” and every Tuesday I will present one painting from his collection of Key West pictures.

The pictures are from original paintings done in Acrylic and/or Oil…and some of them are already in famous collections all over the globe. The originals that are available for purchase range in price from $ 695 to $ 4,500 based on sizes. There are also prints available.

As with most of Key West, you don't have to walk very far to get here - one block across from Duval Street. One of the few stone buildings in Old Key west, glimpses of the very distinguished facade can be glimpsed from the pavement through the tropical trees and bushes in the front yard.

As with many of the larger Victorian properties in Key West, the house is an impressive testament to a wealthy period in the City's history. The porches that encircle the two floors of the house and the lush gardens initiate a(nother) bout of "Why don't we live somewhere warm? . . ." "We could live here . . . "

The inside of the house is interesting with period and antique furniture that belonged to Ernest Hemingway and his wife Pauline (number two of four?). What makes the visit, however, is the tour guide with their informative and humourous commentary. A life like Hemingway's is rich material for such a tour - there's nothing like stories of excessive drinking and salacious gossip to bring life to an old house. You may have to wait a few minutes but it's the difference between "It's an old house with old stuff in it" and "Aaaah . . . now that Hemingway guy really lived!"

Don't miss the writer's studio or the cats (you'll have a job to miss those) . . . and toy around with the idea of having an old bar urinal in your garden - it'll make a great story.

Five Things to do in Key West - Series 7

Today we will visit the historical harbor of Key West where all the sunset cruisers and many privat boats are anchored. The sculpture in the front shows a wrecker looking out to the water to see if there are some unsuspecting ships to loot.

Here is the AIDS-Memorial at Whitehead Pier remembering all those who have died from this illness.

At "Dog Beach" is the only place in Key West where you can take a swim with your four-legged friend.

And enjoy on the way back home all these beautiful homes, like this one on Southard Street.

Gingerbred Fence

Do you want to know what's hidden behind this nice gingerbred fence? Come down here for a visit and discover it yourself! You will find this cute piece of wood work adorning most of the houses on this island - one of the many charmes for a photographer living in Key West.

Wenn du wissen moechtest, was sich hinter diesem huebsch geschnitzen Gartenhaag verbirgt, dann komm am Besten runter nach Key West und finde es selber heraus. Man nennt diese Holzarbeiten auch "Gingerbred-Schnitzereien" (Gingerbred heisst soviel wie Lebkuchen) und man sieht sie hier ueberall, an all den pittoresken Haeusern der Insel. Sie geben ihnen diesen tropischen Charme - ein Hochgenuss fuer jedes fotografische Aug.

Simply White

White door and white fence at Trumann Annex - a clean and nice look. The palmtree at the door (and in the yard of course) gives a tropical touch.

Die vorherrschende Farbe hier ist "Weiss", was wiederum einen Eindruck von Sauberkeit und Geschmack wiederspiegelt. Den suedlich-tropischen "Touch" gibt die kleine Palme an der Haustuere, quasi das "Tuepchen auf dem i". Wie mag es wohl drinnen aussehen?

This is one out of all the cute and very typical Key West Conch houses, photographed on Elizabeth Street. Poinciana trees and palmtrees are spending the nessecary shades in the hot summer time.

Key West has its own Lighthouse. It is located at Whitehead Street, across from Hemingway House. It worths to climb up all the small steps because up on the top you will have a fantastic view over the island.
