The mission had no problems with the weather. The launch was initiated yesterday around Kennedy Space Center at 2:28 PM. The countdown contained no serious technical issues.
will blast into the stratosphere to deliver big spare parts and a load of supplies to the International Space Station
Can you see that little white dot? That's the Shuttle Atlantis only some minutes after the launch!
Atlantis is scheduled to arrive at the International Space Station in approximately two days after launch. Some impressions captured of all that smog and exhaust - a dramatic picture,
but, is this environmental friendly????
A close up of all that smog...
It was hard to get a parking spot anywhere closer, there were people, people - everywhere!
But I liked the industrial background to this event in high technology.
American Space Science and the American Flag - how more patriotic can I be?
And this as a (legal!) immigrant....*smile*....
Hi my friends,
So much to the launch of the Space Shuttle yesterday. It was her last flight up there. There will be more launches this year but with another ship and for other purposes. I have enjoyed this maybe 10 minutes of excitement and of capturing these impressive moments.
The search for a parking was more than an hour. But in the end it was worth it!
Thank you for all your wonderful comments to my post yesterday.
Stay tuned, come back tomorrow to my Sunday Wordless Special.
ENJOY!

It is interesting and very LOUD too, dear Yvi. Thanks for commenting.
I always wanted to see a shuttle launch but there just werent too many of them in New York :-) Wonderful shots, lucky with the weather!
Great shot!
Thank you Diane for your kind comment. Today you'll see much more on Television than in real - but it's the atmosphere all around that spectacle, that makes it exciting...you know.... :))
Thank you animkundu. It's always nice to see new faces visiting my blog :)
You never let me down, you just get better and better.
And you never let me down with your wonderful comments and compliments, Donald :) thanks also for this one, it makes my day!
Awesome (and historical!) shots Susanne...I loved these...and I loved the billowy exhaust, even if it probably isn't ecofriendly. ha
It is great that you were able to "catch" that historic moment with your camera and with beautiful photos for us to see.
Thank you so much, Joan. Glad you liked my smoky series of the Shuttle.
Ganz herzlichen Dank, lieber Peter fuer deinen netten Kommentar. :)
Great shots Susanne! I wish I could have been there to photograph it. My co-worker was there, she sent me a photo from her cell phone. It just wasn't the same.
Thanks for sharing.
How exciting for you! My sister witnessed a launch many years ago and talked about it being very loud. It brings back memories of watching Gemini take off when I was in grade school. We all got to go to the gym and crowd around a little TV.
These are great shots. I wish I could have been there to photograph it as well. I was at work and I had school that evening. A co-worker of mine took the day off to see her take off. She sent me a picture from her cell phone. It just wasn't quite the same as being there.
Thanks Patty for your kind comments, very much appreciated :)
Hi Bookworm, thank you for commenting here to this Shuttle event. I'm glad my photos brought back some nice childhood memories :)
Dear Susanne,
I love your photo of the shuttle smoke trail and the US flag on the bottom. I love what it represents. I hope to see the shuttle before they retire the last one.
Thanks again for posting such a great photo.
