A 1500 Year Old Tree

The Angel Oak

is a Live Oak (Quercus Virginiana) that is a native species found throughout the Lowcountry (Costal Carolina). Believed to be in excess of 1500 years old, its massive, draping limbs and wide spreading canopy present the aura of an angel but the naming of this tree was acquired from the tree's previous owners, Martha and Justin Angel.

    I know it's just the type of tree it is, but I would have normally expected a tree that old to be very, very tall. But it has arms stretching everywhere and awesome looking.

    Live Oaks are very interesting trees. I don't know of any others that have branches that reach the ground and then grow back up. It seems that every plantation home in South Louisiana, and probably the rest of the South, have Live Oaks lining the road to the plantation.

    yes, these old impressive oaks are typical for the South and so beautiful, like this one out side of Charleston.

    I so love these old Live Oak Trees. Their character is so unique and interesting. You have captured the beauty of the aged tree very nicely. You make me long to visit South Carolina again -- it's been quite awhile since I've been there! :)

    We have these all over the place. I love how the limbs droop down to the ground - so mysterious. I'm amazed that a tree could live so long! :)

    South Carolina is a very nice living places, I have to agree. The warm Southern lifestyle is presented all over and the hospitality is wonderful here, people are open and easy to talk with.

    Great photo--as always. Several varieties of oak are indigenous to the part of California I live in, but unfortunately not Live Oak. I wish they were. In my opinion one of the most beautiful types of tree in the world.
