Friendship and Green Ivy

House in Down Town Charleston

False friendship, like the ivy, decays and ruins the walls it embraces;
but true friendship gives new life and animation to the object it supports.

  1. Love the ivy. I always wondered does it make a house damp when ity grows round the walls. I like it though and think it makes the house so pleasing to the eye.

  2. Hi Carol,

    you're my first visitor this morning! Thanks for your visit and comment. I agree with you, it makes the house "cozy" looking, right?

  3. Nice shot. Where I grew up there are a lot of large turn-of-the-century homes and many are covered with ivy. Your photo brought a touch of home to my morning--thanks.

  5. I'm another one that loves Ivy on houses. It looks so idyllic and even romantic - like something from the countryside in England.

    ...and even better with woodbine or Japanese Ivy which is red! Gorgeous!

    Love your photos and the poems goes well to them :-)

  7. Ivy adds such character. I've always liked ivy, however it can be very destructive. Hmmmm....like a "false friendship?" I'd never thought of it that way.

  11. My daughter mentioned just yesterday that she would like to have our house covered in Ivy! Great pic Suzanne, looks like an old house that I would love to explore.

  12. Yes, it's probably the dream of lot of us, but don't forget, an old house like this one and full with Ivy is probably also full with bugs... :-)

  13. I always loved buildings covered with ivy. Perhaps because green is my favorite color?

  17. Wow, this ivy really spread. You know this is something I would not allow on my house, I know it is nice, but the bugs in the house are not nice, lol. Great capture as always, Anna :)

  18. Me too, Anna.... I could not live in a house like that, I hate bugs too much... you know that...spiders etc... you remember that post you've made some months ago and my comment...LOL...

  19. I try to see the beauty in everything. we all have our own flaws. I hate bugs. But I would be willing to figure out how to keep them OUTSIDE just so I could enjoy the ivy. I guess on brick homes it is ok as long as it doesn't get into the wood or chimney. I think thats why they used lattice inches away from the house. to get the look but not actually have it touch your home. if it gets into the wood it can ruin it. but brick????? hmm i have no clue but I'd like to see how to deal with it. It does add so much charm! minus the bugs. sorry so long but we were just talking about this on newer homes & how do you do it without all the mess.
    BEAUTIFUL though. : )
