The Carousel on Broadway

I love these nostalgic carousels - it takes you back in time

Pretty angel...

I love the bunny!

Wild, wild horses...

The Myrtle Beach Carousel

In July 2007, the Pavilion Nostalgia Park at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, SC, became the new home of the famous Myrtle Beach Pavilion’s Herschell-Spillman Carousel. Dating back to 1912, the carousel made its debut at The Myrtle Beach Pavilion in 1950. Of the 15 working Herschell-Spillman carousels in the country, the Pavilion Nostalgia Park’s carousel is one of the most elaborate and well-kept machines. The Pavilion Nostalgia Park’s Carousel features an array of animals including hand-painted frogs, lions, ostriches, zebras, giraffes and roosters.

The Pavilion Nostalgia Park’s design recalls the atmosphere of The Myrtle Beach Pavilion Amusement Park, which celebrated its farewell season in 2006 after 58 years as a recreation focal point for Myrtle Beach residents and visitors. Landmarks such as the Myrtle Beach Pavilion’s Herschell-Spillman Carousel and the historic hand-carved German Baden Band Organ are featured at The Pavilion Nostalgia Park.

Popular rides brought to the Nostalgia Park from the Pavilion include the Tea Cup Ride, Motorcycle Ride, Dune Buggy Ride, Kiddie Pirate Ship, Boat Ride, Caterpillar Ride, adult Pirate Ship, and Wave Swinger. Arcade games will be located within the park and traditional games such as the milk can toss will line the park’s midway.
Favorite carnival foods like funnel cakes and corn dogs will be served. The park will also feature a retail store as well as an on-site museum which will house artifacts from The Myrtle Beach Pavilion Amusement Park.

The Pavilion Nostalgia Park is a year-round family attraction located on the east end of Broadway at the Beach, a shopping, dining and entertainment complex.

  1. I really just freaked out because I come from Saratoga Springs, NY and we have a restored carousel which is exceptionally beautiful and it is located on....Broadway...so I suddenly thought you had taken a trip to Saratoga. That said I have also been to Myrtle Beach with my family. It was one of my Mom's favourite vacation spots and I just love it""

  2. Thank you Diane,

for your interesting and nice comment to this post. I know...Broadway...sounds very fashionable, but it's "only" MB. But MB is very fashionable too, that's why so many people use it as THE vacation destination - like your mother did and my husbands mother did.... I liked it too!

  7. When I went to primary school, I spent all my vacations at my grandmother's in Biel. And the scenario was always the same. She picked (I travelled alone at the age of 6 or 7) at the railway station, then we went to Café Stämpfli and ate ice cream, after we went to the cinema for the afternoon session and to close the day we went to Franz Carl Weber and bought toys.

And several times a year, we had carousels on the market place, like the ones you photographed. And, at that time, there were only these ones, none of these so called "modern attractions" as we have today. So, I took a ride or two or three. But when I was around 8, I did not anymore. I said: Naw, this is for kids.

  10. Vibrant, lively and exciting for all ages. You capture the mood and atmosphere very well. Has a hint of sadness about it, like a lonely clown, perhaps the lack of people there give it this.

  11. Beautiful! I love these things! Takes me back to when I was a kid. I'm so glad that people have the foresight to restore some of the old ones. Some of them are true art.
